Couples Counseling Helps Resolve Relationship Issues
In our work with couples we attempt to provide a setting in which both partners can safely explore their relationship, better understand their difficulties, and bring about desired change. Sometimes being in a relationship can feel like a battle between two equally deserving opponents — commitment versus freedom, love versus career, intimacy versus independence. One side is going to win and one is going to lose, but there is no way they are going to shake hands and both declare victory.
Balancing one’s own needs and desires with those of their partner is one of the most daunting aspects of being in a relationship. Partners can feel constantly compromised. On the one hand, they may feel they are giving up everything to be with the other person. On the other hand, they may feel isolated, getting what they want personally but missing out on love and connection.
As couples counselors, we strive to foster a partnership where both partners feel supported by the relationship, instead of stifled by it. we help each partner to clarify and explore what their individual’s needs are and strengthen their ability to ask for them. Having a foundation in place where both partners know how to talk about their individual goals, needs, and feelings is crucial as the couple faces the inevitable life transitions that will come their way.
